How To Fall When Skating

If you’re new to ice skating, then you’re going to fall over. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

But, the more you know about how to fall on ice, the better. Not only will this help you avoid a skating injury, but you won’t look like such a dork when you fall down.

When you’re ice skating, you usually know when you’re going to fall over. So, if you start to wobble, go with it. The first thing you need to do is bend your knees, and try to get down in a squatting position. Next, you’re going to want to lean to one side, but try not to put your hands on the ice. Get your hands off the ice as quickly as possible, to make sure skaters don’t skate over them.

Try you’re hardest not to lean or fall backwards, as you’ll risk a nasty bump on the head. If you didn’t already know… ice is hard, and hitting you head’s gonna hurt. So, be sure to avoid this at all costs. However, if you do fall down backwards, try to land on your bum. Your bum is pretty well padded, so it won’t hurt as much.

Try not to think about or be afraid of falling on the ice, as this will make you more tense and more likely to fall over. When you do fall, don’t worry about trying to be graceful or being embarrassed, everybody falls on the ice.

Knowing how to fall is easy. Getting up… that’s the hard part. Get on you’re hands and knees and pop one ice skate on the floor between you hands. Use the end of the ice skate to stop your foot from sliding on the ice under you, and push up slowly. If you’re near the edge even better, just grab onto the side and yank yourself up.
